In need of a little spring decorating inspiration? Don't fret: the unveiling of the 2022 Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Palm Beach is almost here. Twenty-four designers, hailing from all across the country, have been working around the clock to transform a spectacular Mediterranean Revival estate into a design laboratory filled with endless decorating ideas. We're offering a peek into the process with exclusive looks at the inspiration behind each of the creatives' rooms and outdoor spaces. Browse these 22 room renderings from this year's Show House that will surely get you excited for its opening in March.
The 2022 Kips Bay Decorator Show House Palm Beach opens to the public on Saturday, March 5, with a special Opening Day Preview Reception on Friday, March 4. The Show House will remain open until Sunday, April 3, for both in-person and virtual experiences. All proceeds from the Show House will support the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club in the Bronx, New York, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County. Tickets for general admission and the Opening Day Preview Reception are on sale now.
Amanda Reynal Interiors's "Breakfast Hideaway"
“There is nothing more delightful than a lush outdoor room with the protection and comforts of the indoors,” says Amanda Reynal of her reimagined sun terrace. The Des Moines-based designer found inspiration in the private verandas of old-world Palm Beach homes to create an intimate terrace hideaway. Banquette-style sofas in buzzy fabrics create an invigorating salon for guests to relax with a cold drink in hand. Reynal plans to incorporate animated pops of pink, yellow, and green on the terraces as a homage to the classic Palm Beach color palette.
Andrea Schumacher Interiors's "Flutter"
A sumptuous sea of blue envelops the darling powder room that invites guests to linger and recharge. Designer Andrea Schumacher evoked Palm Beach’s coastal environment in the room’s watery palette and whimsical motif. Playful wallcoverings and layered fabrics from Schumacher’s own line, Liesl, act as a backdrop for brilliant works of art like a butterfly installation by Paul Villinski and an oil painting of a native Florida bird from AXIOM Fine Art Consulting. An ornamental Currey & Company chandelier illuminates the room from overhead while asserting a sense of fantasy. Ravishing fixtures by Kohler complement the space's metallic accents.
Ashley Gilbreath Interior Design's "Tented Retreat"
An admirer of Veere Greenery, Ashley Gilbreath drew inspiration from the decorating great's iconic tented rooms for the primary bedroom. Neutral stripes swathe the room in elegance, creating a romantic and tranquil escape from the woes of daily life. Rich textures and pedigreed antiques artfully contrast with feminine details such as the floral bolster, monogrammed linens, and silk lampshades. Gilbreath aims for the bedroom to feel timeless and relaxed with a few modern flourishes.
Bakes and Kropp Fine Cabinetry's "Classic Meridian with a Twist"
New York-based Bakes and Kropp Fine Cabinetry saw the kitchen's varied ceiling height as a noble challenge when thinking of the cook space's redesign. Instead of concealing it, the team plans to celebrate its eccentric qualities by building a quaint coffee nook under the lowest part of the ceiling. The rest of the kitchen embraces a Mediterranean sensibility with crisp white walls (paints from Benjamin Moore) paired with rich walnut cabinetry and Silestone countertops. State-of-the-art appliances from JennAir and Kohler fixtures seamlessly equip the kitchen for modern living and entertaining.
Bell Design, Inc.'s "Orville's Fever Dream"
Known for his imaginative and theatrical designs, landscape designer Robert Bell's vision for the garden is to transport guests to fantastical new worlds. Bell pulled inspiration from a number of sources, but the oil paintings of Haitian-inspired landscapes by Palm Beach artist Orville Bulman led him to favor a colorful jungle theme. At the entry gate, Silver Bromeliad sprouts from Gilded Age terra-cotta urns mark the path to a Chippendale-style pavilion framed by topiaries shaped into animals by Bacho Factory. A cocktail garden is nestled further into the garden with "planterns" filled with bromeliads and orchids that hang over dining and lounge furnishings by McKinnon and Harris.
Beth Diana Smith Interior Design's "The Wonderland Dining Room"
New Jersey-based decorator Beth Diana Smith viewed the dining room as an enchanting setting for nights filled with laughter, stories, and of course, amazing food. Smith says she'll rely on a refined mix of textures, patterns, and colors to give the room a sophisticated, wonderland-like atmosphere. "My goal was to create a playful and refined space that marries beautiful details with conversation pieces, from textured wallpaper to velvet chairs to incorporating wildlife in subtle ways," says Smith.
Catherine M. Austin's "Jewel of the Jungle"
For the guest house kitchen and dining room, Catherine M. Austin merges design elements from some of her beloved sunny destinations—Marrakech, Costa Rica, the Cote d’Azur, and Palm Beach—to create a casita bursting with color and character. "The casita would be my idyllic haven to entertain friends from near and far…a place to have fun, laugh, and host a range of colorful characters where the surroundings reflect their joie de vivre," says Austin.
CW Stockwell and Voutsa's vivacious "Martinique Celebration" wallpaper cloaks the walls while a gracious dining table set with vintage Italian pottery, hand-sewn linens, Grecian glassware, and Colombian placemats sits at the center. The sweet galley kitchen features lively green cabinets and a graphic wallpaper by Thibaut that seamlessly connects the two spaces.
Craig & Company's "The Octopus's Garden"
When Joan Craig learned she would be designing the foyer, she immediately felt the entry hall needed to connect to ocean conservation and the Palm Beach lifestyle. "On a local scale, the lifestyle and character of Palm Beach specifically are so inherently tied to the ocean," says Craig. "When designing our space here at Kips Bay this year, we pictured clients who spend much of their days in the water: surfing, swimming, diving, walking on the beach."
The Chicago- and New York-based decorator reached out to Maria Apelo Cruz and Mike Jovanovic of MJ Atelier to produce a fantastical mural depicting an "octopus's garden." Craig notes that humans and octopi both tend to gravitate towards luminous objects, inspiring brilliant treasures such as Eve Kaplan gilt chandelier, antiqued MJ Atelier eglomise mirrors, and woven gold Jim Thompson fishnet to fill the space. An ombre turquoise rug from New Moon looks as though waves are coming down the stairs.
Damour Drake's "The Toddler's Haven"
After learning the owners of the 1923 home have a newborn in the family, the Damour Drake team knew they wanted to transform the sitting room into a toddler's haven. The room honors all the babies born since the pandemic by providing an immersive space for them to learn and grow while still expressing their own creativity.
Goddard Design Group's "Guest House Living Room"
The home's guest house living room evokes scenes from a modern French salon with its hand-painted linen wall panels and beamed ceiling lacquered in a delicious blue shade. Designer Chris Goddard wanted the guest space to feel vibrant yet inviting so he layered exciting shades such as chartreuse and hot pink with classic patterns and modern textiles.
"My signature style is timeless, elegant spaces that tell a story with a bit of whimsy, and I created the perfect space to reflect who I am as a designer and a room in which anyone would feel comfortable and welcome," says Goddard.
Janie Molster Designs's "In the Pink: A Poolside Paradise"
Janie Molster wants everyone to feel pretty in pink when stopping at the home's poolside retreat. Playful umbrellas donning hand-blocked Indian fabrics lead guests to a quiet seating section filled with pale pink Chippendale benches, sculpted plantings, and columns topped with chinoiserie-style vases and ginger jars. The Richmond-based designer plans to wrap the shaded pergola in billowy, white curtains while a classic pink-and-white cabana stripe anchors the gathering hub. On the opposite end, swivel lounge chairs in graphic pink-and-white fabrics flank the entrance to the entertaining pavilion where guests can enjoy chilled rosé.
Jim Dove Design's "The Monkey Bar"
Palm Beach-based designer Jim Dove envisioned the home's bar and den as a place for "pre-dinner cocktails or that all-important nightcap when so many of the world’s problems get solved." Dove paid tribute to New York's renowned Monkey Bar, which shuttered during the height of the Covid pandemic. de Gournay’s “Deco Monkeys” wallpaper sets the room's rich terra-cotta palette with dramatic taffeta curtains crafted by The Shade Store giving the bar its "swanky" feeling. An Art Deco-inspired chandelier from Currey & Company shines overhead a bar sink by Kohler.
Joy Street Design's "In Real Life"
Kelly Finley of Joy Street Design wanted the guest house bedroom to bridge the space between our physical and virtual worlds. "Our intention was to create a self-contained space that allows you to retreat away from your problems—an energetic bathroom, space to use as a work area or vanity, and a very joyful bedroom—but also allows you to be engaged and connected with the world in a variety of ways," says Finley.
Tapping into the new world of NFTs, her team worked with emerging brands to create displays that show a variety of digital art and videos across the suite's fabric walls (S. Harris). Finley also opted to move away from the traditional Palm Beach palette by using rich reds and purples for an elevated escape.
Nikki Levy Interiors's "Petal to the Metal" and "Happy You're A-Round"
Florida-based designer Nikki Levy gave two of the home's bathrooms an indulgent spa makeover. In the primary bath entitled "Petal to the Metal," vibrant verdant tones in floral wallpaper and mosaic compliment the golden hues of the Kohler sink and tub fixtures.
"Happy You're A-Round," the home's smaller bathroom, offers a more lighthearted approach with circle and half-moon motifs dotting throughout.
Noz Design's "No Bad Mondays"
The home's sitting room is designed as, "a love letter to all the spaces in our homes that have aided our wellness these past two years, as 'home' has expanded to be a dwelling, workspace, classroom, and more," explains Noz Nozawa.
The San Fransisco-based designer envisions the petite room as an airy, light-filled space where one can put their mental and emotional well-being first through meditation and relaxation.
Paloma Contreras Interior Design's "Green Gardens"
Houston-based designer Paloma Contreras embraced the well-defined Palm Beach aesthetic while putting a fun, modern twist on her vision for the home's sunroom. The decorator brings a sense of the outdoors with a lively color palette of green and white and unexpected garden elements such as treillage.
"To bring in a modern twist, we ran the treillage in squares rather than a more traditional lattice pattern," says Contreras. "The tradition of treillage coupled with its more unexpected and exuberant execution feels quintessentially Palm Beach!"
In a nod to her design icon, Contreras had two slipper chairs custom-made to mimic Billy Baldwin's original design along with the sofa. Chic rattan pieces by Soane Britain and a stylish backgammon table by Oomph speak to Palm Beach's playful spirit.
Pearl Design Interiors's "Outdoor Patio"
The team at Pearl Design Interiors sought to give the classic Palm Beach style a bit of an edge with their design of the outdoor patio. The black-and-white color scheme turns up the drama while pops of pink in the fabrics and flowers grounds the entertaining hub into its tropical landscape.
Peter Pennoyer Architects' "Drawing Room"
Peter Pennoyer and Alice Engel of Peter Pennoyer Architects drew inspiration for the drawing room's diverse textures, eye-catching patterns, and gracious furnishing from the flora and fauna of paradise. The duo aims for the room to evoke "Florida’s rich history and hospitality," and pull people in for a refreshing evening cocktail.
Philip Gorrivan Design's "Sala Exotico"
New York-based designer Philip Gorrivan looked to Italian modernism, Brazilian design, and Palm Beach flair to devise a sitting room filled with luxurious comforts. Fromental’s "Bruyère" wallpaper provides an animated backdrop for antiques and sculptural furnishings. Breezy drapery fabricated by The Shade Store provides a seamless transition between the layered retreat and the open balcony.
Sarah Bartholomew Design LLC's "Brighton Boudoir"
Sarah Bartholomew brings eccentric British panache to Palm Beach with her vision for the guest bedroom. The Nashville-based designer found inspiration in the historic silhouettes and furnishings of the British Palace, Brighton Pavilion.
"Once a seaside retreat for King George IV, Brighton Pavilion is a blend of Indian, European, Moorish, and Chinese architectural styles and is surrounded by beautiful Regency style gardens," Bartholomew explains. "In the same manner, I set out to construct a room that is meant to make one feel like they are enveloped in an exotic English garden."
The tented green stripes make the bedroom feel like a little jewel box holding a collection of handsome antiques and worldly textiles.
